He was born in Brisbane, Queensland.  He spent much of his time during his early years onboard numerous private vessels (large and small) on Moreton Bay and the Southport Broadwater.  In 1984 he returned to the Gold Coast after 11 years overseas working onboard drill ships and oilfield supply vessels.
