Peter has been a recreational boat owner since 1972. He qualified as Coxswain in Victoria in 1989 while working on abalone fishing vessels.

| In 1996 he qualified as Master Class Five while operating his own whale watching and diving charter vessel at Eden NSW, which he ran for nine years while also skippering abalone fishing vessels along the NSW south coast from Cape Howe to Port Stevens. |
| In 2001 Peter moved to North Qld and was employed as Master/engineer on Pilot vessels in the Torres Strait based at Thursday Island. |
| Since then Peter has skippered an overnight charter vessel in the Gulf of Carpentaria, a wet line fishing vessel at Coral Bay, WA., Pilot vessels at Bowen and has also worked on a live trout fishing vessel at Bowen. |
| Peter is also a skipper on the Bowen VMR rescue vessel 'Bowen Rescue'. |
| He also has a Marine Engine Driver Grade Two Certificate and a Skipper Grade Three Certificate. |
| He is now having fun passing on some of his boating experience to Boatsafe license candidates at Bowen, the Whitsundays and Burdekin areas. |
